each branch of a nation's research tree is called a focus. each focus produces various bonuses to the nation's technology points. it is possible to focus in several branches at the same time. there are two main focuses on military technology: military industrialization and military pacification. military pacification is the focus that produces additional resources for pursuing military pacification. the other focuses are based on historical research that has produced several different technology points. each of these focuses is represented by a golden triangle without any text; both the progress percentage and the bonus amount of each focus are listed to the left and right of this triangle.

the german focus tree is one of three national focus trees that are only available for europe, accessible with a single button (europe, focus button, focus_tree). german focuses are playable for germany, czechoslovakia and italy only.
the soviet focus tree is one of three national focus trees that are only available for europe, accessible with a single button (europe, focus button, focus_tree). soviet focuses are playable for the soviet union, and only the german focus tree contains soviet-only focus tree branching.
the focus tree, along with its national modifiers and effects, is only available in the german expansion. it includes four focus trees for germany and its allies, and can be identified by the word "teuton" in the name.
the teutonic civilization is the civilization used in the teutonic focus tree, and is the default civilization of the teutonic focus tree. it is made up of people and natural advantages of the teutonic race (see below for more information). it's main distinctive feature is an innate bonus for research, culture and military (15% per research, culture, and military).
